In today’s blog, we’re going over some useful tips on editing an epic movie trailer in Premiere Pro. We will also review a breakdown for the visual and sound design of a mock movie trailer that was edited by Premiere Gal for the ArtGrid x Artlist Challenge. In the PremiereGal trailer, a variety of shots, text, and sound were used to build a story along with tension. The trailer shows that it’s not always necessary to have a bunch of effects to make a compelling trailer.

Audio

Instead of doing a voiceover,  real audio clips from the news and public testimony can also be used as voiceover. Once you have found the right audio clips, line them up in the timeline. If the trailer needs to be about 45 seconds, you can trim and cut out all unnecessary words you don’t need.

Next go to Artlist.io and browse for music. When searching for music, it’s pretty rare that the first clip you select is going to be the best, so be sure to have fun and really explore various clips. For the Premiere Gal trailer, music from the cinematic category was chosen.

In order to make the music track shorter, right click the clip and send the clip to Adobe Audition. From here, you can use the cool remix feature that will automatically splice and cut the music to end at the desired length specified in Adobe Audition. Adobe Premiere Pro & Adobe Audition work extremely well together and can really enhance your work!

Finding Stock Video

So now that the music was remixed to the correct duration, the next step is choosing the right  Stock Footage. If you’re making a trailer, music video, or an ad, what’s really great about Artgrid is that you can browse by filmmaker to gather different angles or clips of the same scene or actor, so it will really feel like it was intentionally shot for your ad or project.

In the Premiere Gal trailer, since it’s a documentary, there’s a bit more flexibility on diversity of shots and filmmakers. Instead of looking for shots around the same actor or object, you can also search by themes. For example, if making a trailer about climate change, you could search for wildfires, power plants, earth, garbage, and much more. After downloading your clips, methodically place the footage clips into the timeline to build a story and then customize length as needed to create your visual flow.

Titles and Calls To Action

When making a trailer, try to include a simple call to action within the first 10 seconds. This will be imperative when creating a documentary trailer. The call to action does not need to be long or riddled with effects. Sometimes short and simple is a sure ticket to perfection.

Edit Rhythm and Pace

Another good tip to keep in mind is that the length of your video clips can contribute to the intensity and build momentum within your trailer. In the Premiere Gal trailer, the climax began when you see a variety of different shots related to our earth. Taking a look at the Premiere Gal trailer timeline below, the video clips go from wider to smaller, which indicates the video clips are getting shorter and the pace is getting faster until the end of the sequence.

Consider Match Cuts

At the end of the trailer, there is a gorgeous match cut from the human eye to the earth.   As the trailer began with Earth, it made sense to end with the earth in order to tie the story together.  This brings up another useful tip that thoughtful match cuts can really add to the visual and creative impact within a trailer or even film.

Sound Effects

Now adding sound effects, this can really add to the cinematic magic. In the Premiere Gal trailer, the Artlist SFX library was used. For ambience, clips such as fire burning, city traffic, and helicopters were used. Then for the builds, reverse cymbal crashes and big cinematic impact wooshes helped to build tension. LIke visual effects, you would modify as needed within your timeline and adjust accordingly.

Sound Mixing

To mix the music so all sounds are at proper levels, you can use an AI plugin called Alex Audio Butler.  You would assign each audio track an audio type from the Audio Track mixer, then it automatically adjusts the sounds. Alex Audio Butler really makes the sound editing process stress free and productive!
